Rude Nazri Warned Karuna-nidhi to Stay Away

KUALA LUMPUR: Stay out of the controversy involving the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) – that’s the stern message for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, who rebuked Karunanidhi for interfering, said what happened here had “nothing to do with Tamil Nadu.”

”Do not meddle in our affairs. This is Malaysia, not Tamil Nadu ... lay off,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby yesterday, when asked about wire reports that Karunanidhi had written to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging him to take immediate and appropriate action to end the “sufferings and bad treatment” of Tamils in Malaysia.

Nazri said he would not apologise for calling those who participated in the Hindraf rally on Sunday “penyangak” (thugs), stressing that the demonstrators had violated the law as no permit was issued.

He explained that it was illogical to assume that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi would not accept their memorandum.

“I cannot accept the action of 20,000 people who want to be involved in a simple action of submitting a memorandum. They can send one person or even 10. The question is – are they really sincere in highlighting their grievances, or are they trying to create chaos?

“It’s a mistake to make an apology to them. It’s not the Indian community that’s involved. Don’t be samseng (gangster),” he said, adding that the issue was discussed at yesterday’s Cabinet meeting.

Nazri said police would probe a petition to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, which stated that a genocide would occur here with the Indian community being forced into violence like in Sri Lanka if their “cause” was ignored.

“The Attorney-General’s Chambers will study who sent the petition and charge the writer for sedition. The Hindraf memorandum is also a matter of concern because its contents are seditious,” he added.

“I’m sure these matters will also create animosity between the Indians, the Malays and the Government. We will take action. These people must be responsible for their actions.”
Nazri also reiterated Abdullah’s warning that the Internal Security Act would be used if the situation warranted it.

“Don’t challenge the Government. They can try and hold a rally again and see what will happen,” he added.

“The authorities were accused of excessive action. Look at France, whose police used tear gas and even rubber bullets when a demonstration occurred there.”

Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed support for most of the demands made by Hindraf.

He told reporters yesterday that he turned up at the Klang Sessions Court on Saturday to give moral support to lawyers P. Uthayakumar, Waythamoorthy and V.S. Ganapathi Rao.

Anwar said he had advised Hindraf not to use Article 153 of the Federal Constitution to pursue their demands as it involved the rights and privileges of the Malays and other indigenous local folk.

In a separate press conference, Opposition leader Lim Kit Siang urged Nazri to apologise unconditionally for labelling the demonstrators “penyangak.”

The Star "88 charged , arrest warrants issued against two who failed to show up in court"

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 88 people who participated in the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) rally on Sunday were charged here and in Selayang.

The group, which included a woman and two elderly men, appeared in the courts yesterday after being released on police bail the day before when the remand order against them expired.

While 48 were prosecuted in magistrate’s courts here, 40 others were charged in the Sessions Court in Selayang.

Those charged came from all walks of life: students, taxi drivers, clerks, mechanics, lorry drivers, pensioners, the unemployed and civil servants from various states.

Also charged was Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) national integration chief N. Gobalakrishnan. The 48 people charged here are between 21 and 72. They were calm upon hearing their charges and were granted bail of between RM1,500 and RM3,000 each.

Each was accused of displaying a show of criminal force to instil fear on police who were discharging their duty at various main roads in the city on Sunday.

They faced an alternative charge of being in an unlawful assembly that day.

They also faced a second charge of continuing to be in an unlawful assembly knowing that there was an order to disperse.

They claimed trial to all the charges.

Yesterday, two arrest warrants were issued by a magistrate against two men who failed to turn up in court to answer their charges.

Magistrate Ahmad Solihin Abdul Wahid issued warrants against E. Jayaraman, 48, and M. Selvanathan, 45, on an application from the prosecution, saying that the police bail on the two expired yesterday.

R. Magiswary, 45, who was supposed to face similar charges, produced a medical chit through her lawyer for her absence from court. The court set Dec 10 to mention her case.

DPP Adilla Ahmad told the same court that K. Thirushul, 21, was given a special exemption as he was sitting for an examination. Two others did not turn up in court to answer their charges.

In one of the courts, lawyer Saha Arunasalam raised a preliminary objection, saying that the charges framed against his clients were defective but the magistrate dismissed it and set Jan 29 for mention.

In Gombak, 40 men were charged with being at an illegal assembly in front of the Sri Subramaniar temple along Jalan Besar Batu Caves on Nov 25 between 1am and 8am.

Each of them also faced a similar alternative charge as the 48 in Kuala Lumpur.

All of them claimed trial.

Lawyer M. Manoharan then asked for his clients to be given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal, claiming that the charges were defective in that their names were placed in an attached document instead of the main document.

However, DPP Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud said that granting the 40 men a discharge at this stage would amount to the court not adhering to the law.

Judge Hayatul Akmal Abdul Aziz said she would decide on the application today.

Police beefed up security at the Kuala Lumpur and Selayang court complexes with over 100 personnel by 7.30am to avoid any untoward incident.

Those who wanted to get into the Jalan Duta court complex were earlier screened by police at its entrance.

The main gate was closed at 9.30am.

NST : ‘Im a man on the job, not on the streets’

KUALA LUMPUR: All the hard work done for the Indian community by the MIC is being "jeopardised" by the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) and other opposition parties.

The struggle and welfare of the community had been addressed by the government since independence, said MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu(Pic Left)

"Hindraf has only emerged now but the MIC has been at it for 50 years," he said.

"They (the protesters) are fighting to create problems. They are troublemakers."
He said MIC had been fighting for the Indians through consultation and dialogue in the spirit of the Barisan Nasional.

"Being a multi-racial society, we have to take into consideration the sentiments of the other races and BN component parties."

Samy Vellu, who is also works minister, said although all its proposals and requests could not be entertained, the MIC had achieved a degree of success, given the political scenario in Malaysia.
"We find it disturbing for others to think otherwise. Their actions are in fact jeopardising the positive efforts being considered and undertaken for the community," he said at the parliament lobby yesterday.

Samy Vellu said the MIC was aware of issues confronting the community, concerning education, housing, employment, health, the economy and religion.

"It may appear that the MIC leadership is doing little to address these issues, when in fact they are highlighted almost every week at cabinet meetings and even in parliament, sometimes to the ire of BN leaders.

"We fully understand the shortcomings. These issues cannot be addressed over-night. There is so much more to be done over a period of time."

ON EDUCATION

Samy Vellu said more Indian students were being given government scholarships, study loans and opportunities to pursue technical, business and professional courses locally and abroad.
This comes by way of the Tamil School Action Council, Yayasan Strategik Social, Maju Institute of Educational Development, Tafe College and the Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology.

"They can be poor but if they have brains we will not deny them a sound education.

"To date, the MIC has secured financial aid to the tune of RM94 million for 14,300 students, including 1,300 to pursue medical studies in Russia, the Ukraine and Indonesia.

"This includes Public Service Department scholarships for 176 deserving students last year. The government has also approved 500 seats for matriculation studies annually, while Giatmara has allocated a 10 per cent quota for Indian students to pursue technical courses," he said.

On Tamil schools, 180 new schools were built in the last two decades, while another 80 are in the pipeline.

More Tamil school teachers are being employed. In 1970, there were 3,258 teachers compared with 7,126 this year, an increase of 118.7 per cent over the past 37 years.

These efforts have produced exemplary UPSR results with 45 students securing 7 As in 1995, 202 in 2002, 579 last year and 573 this year.

The Tamil language has been accepted at STPM level as a critical subject for admission into the Arts Faculty in Universiti Malaya.

ON RELIGION

Temples are being relocated or built in a systematic way so that they can better serve worshippers. This has been one of the main issues.

After the furore caused by the demolition of a 100-year-old temple in Shah Alam last month, the government has now made it mandatory that demolitions and relocations of temples be made after consultation with the MIC chief.

ON HOUSING

Samy Vellu said more homes had been allocated for Indian squatters.

"In the federal capital, 1,500 houses have been given to displaced squatters. Another 2,700 will soon benefit."

ON EMPLOYMENT

He said opportunities for Indians in the civil service used to be a mere two per cent but the representation is increasing.

"We have even fought for estate workers to get better monthly wages," he said.

Samy Vellu said the MIC also undertook efforts to improve the community's economy through various channels like the chambers of commerce and industry and business associations.
In a separate interview with Reuters, Samy Vellu said:

"We have fought worse battles than this during elections (referring to Sunday's rally organised by Hindraf).

"We don't worry about this. We are confident of winning the next elections hand-somely."
Several thousand Indians participated in the rally and had to be dispersed by water cannon and tear gas.

"I'm not going to lose sleep over this demonstration. To me, I can throw the records on the floor on what I have done. I am not a man on the streets. I am a man on the job."

Hindraf Leader Arrested !!!

through Malaysiakini : http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/75432

A key leader of the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) was arrested early this morning, sparking fears of another police round-up of leaders of the movement.

Lawyer VS Ganapathi Rao was arrested at his house in Shah Alam, Selangor, at about 7.15am by a police team from Seremban.

Another Hindraf leader M Manoharan told Malaysiakini that Ganapathi was immediately taken to Seremban and is expected to be charged with sedition.

“I believe he was arrested over a forum which Hindraf held in Seremban two weeks ago. Five of us, including myself, spoke on the plight of the Indian community,” he added.

He said he believed that he and three other Hindraf leaders - including chairperson P Waythmoorthy and legal adviser P Uthayakumar - will soon be arrested by the Seremban police.

When contacted, Uthayakumar too said he was expecting to be arrested soon.

“I am waiting for the police to arrive at my house here in Bangsar. I am sure the police will be coming after us,” he added.

The lawyer also said that he would not be surprised if the Internal Security Act was used against him.
